Week 11

Brochure version #8

Going back to when I set out my project plan, I just want to make sure I have followed what I set out to create. I feel the best addition to this booklet would be a Welcome page to introduce to the designers in the workshop, what, why and how they will be participating:

I’m have gone back to look at week 6’s project plan for this, to make sure I am providing the right information to my designers:

Welcome page text

What?
Welcome to the Graphic Design Workshop, where you’re officially allowed to make mistakes. In fact, I encourage you to make mistakes and not think twice about what you create. Think of this booklet as your workshop journal, where everything you think and make is captured.

Why?
Graphic Designers are struggling with mental health and wellbeing due to stresses and uncertainties in their careers such as deadlines, inconsistent income and long hours looking at screens. The aim of this workshop is to encourage different methods of working and takes the pressure off design practice; from educating designers the very basics of design, to hands-on crafting. Cut up, cut out, glue in, scan in, make a mess!

How?
This workshop will consist of activities, challenges and teamwork. The activities consist of three types, each addressing skills in the following areas:
• Interaction
• Problem Solving
• Collaboration
All of which will encourage thinking away from the screen and outside of the box. No deadlines, no pressure. From experiments with mixed media, doodles/rough sketches, to ideas that inspire future projects, it will be stored here in this very booklet.

Summary

I have reviewed what I have done over the last few weeks as I needed some insight into all of my work and where I am at in regards to the project plan I set out to do in week 6:

Here is what I have actually achieved:

Week 6 – creating the business plan (which I did twice)
Week 7 – moodboards for inspiration
Week 8 – three concepts
Week 9 – chosen concept; brochure. Development with experiments

• I haven’t created a survey but instead used references from a brilliant article which explains how craft is beneficial for graphic design practice
First experiment: black and white, basic activities, jumbled. Feedback was to introduce colour, header titles and review activity pages
Second experiment: Actioned above feedback and developed activities further. Feedback was that it looked too digital, reintroduce the craft element back into the design
Week 10 – further development of brochure.
Third experiment: Actioned above feedback; created my own hand drawn lettering. Testing out on the brochure. Feedback is to consider colour again, make it more subtle and remove digital style lettering. Consider the tear out pages are back to back and will affect both page letters if one side is cut out. Introduce ripped paper, and a cover using my scanned in hand. Also print out mock-up, write on it adjustments and scan back in. Try printing on acetate
Fourth experiment (is the scanned in document): Actioned above feedback and created my own hand drawn digital alphabet typeface. Input into document. Feedback to print it for fifth experiment
Fifth experiment: Printed out mock-up to see how my digital typeface looks. Feedback: review back to back pages and scan back in any improvements I have made on the printed out mock-up
Sixth experiment: actioned above feedback, tear-out pages typefaces are back to back accordingly. Consider feedback with activity numbers themselves and have them hiding out from ripped paper, also introduce some scribbles from my scanned in mock-up
Week 11 – further development of brochure.
Seventh experiment: Actioned above feedback. Consider adding welcome page
Eight experiment: Actioned above welcome page
