Week 9

Part 2

  1. Research and select one existing campaign or service design project that tackles a social problem and analyse its effectiveness. Please remember to include information about any user-centred design processes that may have been used and the impact it brought about.
  2. Write a 300 – 400 word description with screen grabs to illustrate your research findings.

Campaign research

PES – Parley x Corona: The Fish stop motion campaign was designed to raise awareness of plastic in the oceans and encourage people to join the beach clean up movement ‘protect paradise’. ‘Avoid, intercept, redesign’ is also the AIR motto that Parley implement in their campaigns.

Campaign I have chosen

Greenpeace – a life size realistic sculpture made entirely from plastic to replicate whales that are being discovered washed up on beaches with stomach’s full of plastic. These whales are dying from hunger.

I have picked this campaign because of the following:

  • It’s a sculptural piece as opposed to a poster and Greenpeace have thought outside of the box, but also were on a budget. This has added benefits as it became unique – people walking along the beach saw this and it caused shock as it looked realistic. When people realised it was plastic, the shock factor still remained as the sheer amount of waste plastic that has been used to make the whale is powerful.
  • The user-centred design processes involve:
Discovery: the discovery of the sculpture on the beach AND it’s case study video reaches users online, globally
Raising awareness: through the discovery of it being made from used plastic through visual sculpture and then word of mouth from the people who witness it
Outcome: these people will consider the amount of plastic they dispose of and ensure they recycle instead, they will research more about this campaign and potentially even subscribe/donate/become members of Greenpeace.
Solution: More people campaigning, making a change in their lifestyle, more word of mouth about the issue of plastics in the ocean and Greenpeace also profit from it.
