These are playing cards which is elevated above its usual rank in trick-taking games. Typically, these cards outrank all normal (non-joker/wild-card) suits. In other contexts, these cards can refer to any sort of action, authority, or policy which automatically prevails over all others.
In this case, I want a wild-card to engage me somehow to push myself to think outside of the box, and develop/improve the skills I need/have to get to where I want to be.
Images: Various examples of joker cards – traditionally there would be a joker that is illustrated as a jester. Modern day joker cards can be illustrated as anything.
Firstly; I need to think about the purpose of these cards. It’s growth, to enable me to grow as a designer and absorb, explore and create in ways that I haven’t already. To start this idea of making a wild-card, I have begun to look at how growth can be symbolised in my card deck.
Table: this has been taken from a tattooing website that has demonstrated what certain illustrative tattoos represent. I find these really interesting and I never knew that is what they meant.
Images: plant symbolism guide shows how various plants can represent different qualities, and I have chosen the four plants that I feel could be considered as the qualities are all relevant in developing my skills further in the cards.
Illustrations of seven symbols that represent growth in various ways.
Adding colour as a clipping mask based off the original plant colours.
I’ve drawn my own illustrations of the symbols above. I have added colour to enhance the illustrations but I wanted it to be subtle. I have used the colours from the plants themselves and created an overlaid clipping mask in Photoshop, which resulted in only the lines picking up the colours.
Small dash experiment.
Considering larger dashed lines – but I felt that was strongest in the typography.
Solid lines also break up the design, providing better hierarchy between image and text.
Experiments showing how I came to choose the lines that I could write on for my wildcards – I made the opacity at 45% in the end as I wanted to have the lines as guides. I can write my future challenge on these cards to acquire more skills.
