Week 8

Deck of cards:

A “standard” deck of playing cards consists of 52 Cards in each of the 4 suits of Spades, Hearts, Diamonds, and Clubs.

Each suit contains 13 cards: Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King.

Could I do 4 suits – 4 levels? Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Expert.

13 cards in each suit. These could be individual skills.

Image: OK Tarot cards are a successful example of how effective illustration and text can be effective in a deck of cards. The identity of black and pink makes them minimal and straight to the point. The way you use the cards is all down to interpretation.

Images: Flora Magica is a gorgeous example of illustrative cards, how the basic set of playing cards only require the numbers and the designs on the front and reverse can be altered. This is really creative and I personally think the plants with faces are so cute. I have chosen this as an example primarily to show that as long as the numbers are distinguishable, the cards can be played as normal. This asks the question do we even need any images at all?

Getting my examples of cards and laying them out was a really informative exercise for me to do prior to designing my card deck relative to me, personally. I have creative, informative and traditional playing cards but they all vary in design. People will know instantly what they are because of the way they are formatted – the cards are all the same shape, same size and same card-stock. I really love my Type Trumps cards and think they’re a really effective example of how bold various typefaces could look in my final outcome. This is something I need to consider.
