Week 8

Reaching out – continued

Preparation prior for interview with MLSK – Melissa

MSLK stands for ‘memorable, sustainable, lovable, knowledgeable’ and their site is here

  1. I would be really grateful if you would tell me your experience personally with access to sustainable resources. This can be anything at all – whether it’s your experience with clients requesting specific materials and how you approached it/recommended alternatives?
  2. Any suggestions on how the design industry needs to improve its sustainable footprint. Do you think it’s up to designers, or do you feel it would sit with material manufacturers?
  3. Are there concerns that opting for sustainable materials means compromising on quality, or is sustainable pricing too high for client budgets, or is it simply an access/awareness issue?
  4. Do you think if there was a toolkit that was designed to bring designers, product manufacturers and clients together, it would help the design industry become more sustainable?

Other notes and areas to discuss/pick up on:

Article on website titled ‘How to make your packaging sustainable in 2020’:

  • refillable packaging
  • recyclable packaging (but only once!) and ends back up in landfill
  • sugarcane bioplastic (bulldog) isn’t recyclable
  • packaging free

Response:

  • Branding agency for 20 years
  • Findings were that clients are requesting it and have a certain budget in mind
  • Testing is required for sustainable packaging which clients have to do before proceeding with the branding side of things
  • Agrees that you should prioritise the most important factor regarding sustainability as trying to make the whole process completely sustainable is really difficult, especially where other companies are involved with your product
  • Completely agrees with the idea of a community and thinks there is a disconnect in the industry, likes the option to discuss with clients at an earlier stage about the design process on materials
  • As designers we do have a responsibility to recommend and suggest the sustainable alternative, however if the client is aware of it and decides not to opt for that then it’s out of our hands; at least they are educated about sustainable alternatives
  • If you are serious about sustainability as a designer, you have to create your own database of how to source these products and services
