Week 7

Elevator pitch

Step 1: Research

Ways people can collaborate:

• Social Media – instagram/facebook/twitter/linked-in/the dots/snapchat
• Events – festivals/workshops/fairs/virtual events such as lockdown letterheads
• Student collaboration – two or more students from different backgrounds/location/experience
• Working day to day jobs

Mindmaps:

This video explained thoroughly what service design is and how it works. I now understand that service design is ultimately about providing an easy, efficient experience when using something – and that can be absolutely anything in our daily lives from healthcare to social media.

What is the problem I need to address and create a solution for?

• There is a stigma that gardening is fun for retired or the elderly. Maybe once upon a time, but from my discussion with Helen last week this seems to no longer be the case. What about erasing the old age stigma of gardening is for the retired/elderly – promote that gardening is fun and can be enjoyable for all!

Some other ideas stemming off from this:

• Most apps already existing have apps that focus on the here and now of planting and gardening – but what about the future where as a gardener, you want to know what was easy to grow or maybe even what varieties of fruit/vegetables you liked? I myself have found apps that are great for the current season, tracking what I have planted and when vegetables will be harvested – but then nothing to remind me the following year what was successful. (But this only applies to annuals. Obviously plants that are perennials will come back year after year, to remind you they are there. Vegetables are annuals and it’s easy to forget what you grew and harvested. Could this be a turning point in my research?)

• I need to think about every single person’s needs who downloads the digital tool – how can I make these tools suitable for the students, the nine-to-fivers and the retired?

• What about the people who haven’t got the luxury of an outdoor space and/or can’t access an allotment near where they live? How can I introduce gardening in a fun way to them?
