Week 6

Woburn

With a rich history dating back from 969, there has been a timeline of events including the english civil war, and both world wars:

How do you look, research and record?

FROTTAGE:

I wanted to try something I haven’t done in a project before – Frottage. I have made rubbings with various size led pencils, on signs, drains, walls, bricks, benches etc:

PAINTING:

I have taken clippings of the berry bushes and shrubs that were surrounding the area and first made frottage with pencils, then painted them with black acrylic. I wanted to see how much of the detail on leaves would come out:

Photography:

I went to Woburn and took photographs of things I felt were unique to the location, such as signage, remembrance memorial, old bus stop and church:

The photographs above have been overlaid and I have specifically chosen the red post office photos, and the red wartime memorial photos. I have overlaid some of the frottage as I felt the text contrasts really nicely with images. I wanted to create a collage style piece, and I was heavily inspired from Sven Pfrommer. I really loved his work; a combination of text and photography captured in a city environment.

Feedback from tutorial:

My final is too confusing and the filter isn’t appropriate. Therefore I should be thinking about the outcome, possibly having two final photographs? Or even a Quadriptych.
Think about the form of a letterbox, and old English typography. Think about the headlines and quotes used in association with post offices back in the 1800’s. The final needs to be clear as to what I am exploring; either war or post office.
