Rebranding
Welsh design history:
Taken at St. Fagans National Museum of History in South Wales. Matt’s post on the ideas wall reminded me of my visit here in April 2019, where I discovered there is an old grocery shop named “Gwalia Supply Co” full of old food and drink branding. This shop has been presented to look as it would in 1920. I absolutely love this style of design! The colours are really lovely to see, there is a wide variety and very little packaging with no colour. The typography is decorative and bold. Photography has a collage style on the packaging. Back in 1920 there would have been less technological advances, and design would have been created through manual labour. Now, a century later the differences in contemporary design is very drastic.
Some more examples of old packaging I find inspiring are:
Old sweet wrappers – really moving article about old sweet wrappers bringing back memories to elderly sufferers of dementia. It’s powerful, and really proves that branding has such an incredible association with a time in our lives, a place, a person. It’s something we all remember and recognise, and will always be used for consumer goods.

Timeline of packaging – looking at the evolution of branding has been really interesting to see how artistic movements, access to technology and materials have influenced design. And of course, the economy. Brands have had to modify their packaging to suit the consumer needs during that period of time.
