Illustrator workshop notes:

Vector – mathematical pathways. It’s a piece of code and therefore stays good quality and crisp

Right click on typography to make individual letters as shapes after inputting into document. Good for image.

Illustrator uses layers which are lockable, can change layer colours to contrast with image

CMD + D = duplicate

CMD + G = group items to move together

CMD + K = preferences – size increments

Holding SHIFT keeps everything in place i.e. resizing

Click on pen tool and makes geometric pattern. Click and hold makes it curve

Alignments > in objects tab on right of screen above layers (distribute evenly)

210 mm x 210 mm – A4 Square useful for logos

Gradients and spot placements to create shadows and light

Blend tool (steps to show transition of shapes, colour, even lines)

Text to path will make text follow the shape – consider my concrete poetry! Would have saved a lot of time…

Illustrator does live text preview! When writing letters in a sentence use the ‘V/A’ character text (in the settings) tool to tighten up kerning. Tip: tip upside down to spot any unnecessary gaps in type setting

CMD + () bracket bring layers front and back

Snap to point – object – path – offset path – enter millimetres – create depth in letters/image

Manipulating type – warping – object – expand to make into live vectors
